Necessary Murders

Though he felt like slamming the cabin door, Xavier Silvestre closed it gently and leaned against it. Taking a breath and holding it, he centred himself, focusing on calm thoughts and positivity.

His best-case scenario had been to find Patricia Fisher and strike up a congenial conversation. One idea in his head was to act like a starstruck fan. Her name had been in the paper enough that the appearance of an admirer ought not to shock her. She was the one who leaked the news of her discovery – seeking more fame and notoriety, Silvestre assumed, and thus was inviting people to pay attention.

He would ask her about it, carefully asking where it had come from and what had become of the man they found in the hold? He was an albino, wasn’t he? There were questions he could ask and if that tactic didn’t yield the result he wanted, he would lure her somewhere private. Once out of sight, he would knock her out and when she came around to find herself incapacitated, he would cut off a couple of toes or fingers just to get her attention. He knew from experience she would tell him everything he wanted to know.

The latter alternative was less desirable simply because it would attract attention. Even if he made her vanish, tossing her body overboard if he could, questions would be asked.

It was all moot so far though because the woman moved with a phalanx of guards around her. Five security officers, four of which were armed, who needs that much protection?

He had no desire to sail with the ship when it left tonight though he was quite prepared to do so. The Aurelia was to be at sea for the next two days, setting off across the Atlantic with only a stop off at the British Union Isles, a small collection of islands fifty miles due south of the Ascension Islands, planned before they found land again in Rio de Janeiro.

Rio had been Finn Murphy’s destination, that was how Carlos Ramirez had known to seek out Professor Noriega. Murphy clearly knew what he had found and was bright enough to tell no one. Only in death had he revealed where he was going – to one of the world’s leading experts on maritime disasters and a San José fanatic.

Silvestre regretted that the professor’s death was necessary; there just wasn’t any way to convince the man to keep the discovery secret. Ramirez knew enough to take the one artefact he recovered from Murphy to Noriega, hoping it would have worth beyond the value of the gold it was made from. It did, but Ramirez would never have seen it – finding treasure doesn’t work like that. Had he just melted it down, he would still be alive and walking around with a fat wallet to boot. Instead, he left the ship, flew to Brazil and in so doing got three men killed.

Silvestre had no time for remorse – it was a child’s emotion.
